CoSN - Advancing K-12 Technology Leadership

CoSN's 8th Annual International Symposium

Does Web 2.0 Belong in Schools? Policy Issues and Leadership Challenges
March 10, 2009 - 8:00 AM-5:15 PM

Sponsored by The John D. and Catherine T MacArthur Foundation, Goethe-Institute, Pearson Foundation & Adobe Systems, Inc.

Web 2.0 applications such as social networking, virtual reality, games, and wikis are pervasive features in the lives of youth both in the U.S. and around the world.

The 2008 CoSN International Symposium provided a compelling educational rationale for using Web 2.0 resources while noting that the school environment is often unreceptive to these learning applications.

The 2009 International Symposium will move one step beyond the discussion of the previous year. Web 2.0 applications are appropriate and effective when they are not dropped into a “business as usual” approach to teaching and learning. This requires changes in policy and a different type of leadership.

The symposium will focus on:

  • School policies which stimulate or constrain effective use of Web 2.0 applications
  • Cultural Changes of the past decade impacting education
  • Role of school leaders as transformational leaders of change
